Travel & Stay
Coming from abroad? Here is everything we wish someone had told us about Tokyo.
Getting to Tokyo
Haneda (HND) is by far the easier airport — it is inside the city, and Akasaka is about 35 minutes away by train or taxi. Narita (NRT) works too, but budget 90 minutes on the Skyliner plus a transfer.
Where to Stay
We are not providing hotel accommodation, so please book whatever suits you best. For friends coming from abroad we would stay somewhere central rather than near the shrine — the wedding itself is short, and the rest of the week is Tokyo. Go and enjoy the city, and Japan.
Getting Around
Put Suica or Pasmo in your phone wallet before you fly, then tap in and tap out on every subway, train and bus. The areas worth knowing are Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Roppongi, Akasaka, Ginza and Yurakucho.
Family Transport
For family, we are taking care of the rides. The bus picks up in Nerima, in front of our house, and runs Nerima to Nogi Shrine, on to Akasaka Asada for dinner, and back to Nerima afterwards.
November in Tokyo
The best month of the year, and we are not biased. Crisp and dry, 17°C by day and around 10°C once the sun goes down at half past four — bring a proper coat for the evening. The koyo autumn leaves peak the same week.
Our Photos
A few of our favourites, from the day we got engaged onwards.
Photographs are on their way.
Gifts
Your presence in Tokyo — flights, hotels, time off work — is already an enormous gift, and truly the only one we hoped for.
Please no boxed gifts on the day.
Q&A
What time should I actually be there?
Family, please be there by 4:10 p.m. Friends, by 4:25 p.m.
If you are not used to the trains here, give yourself extra time and get to the area early — there are cafés by the station to wait in. The ceremony begins right at 4:40 and is very short, and once it starts you cannot be seated.
Am I invited to the dinner as well?
Family: yes. A bus takes you from Nogi Shrine straight to Akasaka Asada, so you do not need to work out the trains.
Friends: the dinner afterwards is for family only — it is a small room and a seated meal. We would love for you to enjoy the shrine and the evening in Tokyo afterwards; the neighbourhood is lovely at that hour.
What should I wear?
It is a traditional Japanese ceremony at a shrine, so we would ask you to keep it formal and conservative — nothing revealing, nothing flashy. A formal suit is perfectly right.
Kimono is very welcome. If you are renting one, ask for houmongi rather than a yukata, and tell the shop it is for a Japanese wedding — they will know what to bring you.
The ceremony is outdoors but covered, and late afternoon in November gets chilly — bring a light coat. There is gravel underfoot, so wear comfortable shoes that cover your feet fully. No open toes.
I don’t eat everything. Will that be a problem?
Not at all, and please tell us rather than quietly working around it. Halal, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and allergy-safe versions of the same course can be arranged. They need it in advance, so put it in your reply and be specific — an ingredient you must avoid matters more than a label.
I don’t speak Japanese. Will I be lost?
Not for a second. The ceremony is in Japanese, but the rituals are visual and short, and the dinner menus are printed in English too. Half the room is in exactly your position, and the other half is looking forward to meeting you.
When do I need to RSVP?
By October 1st, 2026, please.
If your plans change after that, message us directly.
